MOVE WITH EASE · 1–2 MIN

Give your fingers a little attention

A gentle way to practice the small thumb-to-finger movement used when you pick up little objects.

A CLEAR REASON TO BEGIN

Why try it?

Bringing your thumb across your palm toward your fingertips is called opposition. It is part of the pinch grip you use for small objects. Hand-therapy guidance uses this movement to practice thumb mobility and control. This guide demonstrates that movement; it does not promise better memory, stronger hands or relief from a particular condition.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Let’s give it a try.

  1. 01
One relaxed open left hand above a table, with all five digits visible

    Start with a comfortable hand

Rest your forearm on a table. Let your hand face you, with your wrist comfortable and your fingers gently open. Keep your shoulder relaxed.

  2. 02
The thumb and index fingertip of one left hand lightly touch, forming an O

    Bring two fingertips together

Slowly bring the tip of your thumb toward your index fingertip, making a small rounded O if comfortable. Use a light touch; do not squeeze or push with your other hand.

  3. 03
The thumb and middle fingertip of one left hand lightly touch while the index finger stays separate

    Explore the next finger

Let go, then gently bring your thumb toward your middle fingertip. You may explore the other fingertips within your own comfortable range, then let the hand relax. There is no need to force contact.

Keep it comfortable.

Keep the movement slow and comfortable. Stop if it hurts or causes new tingling or numbness. If you have an injury, recent operation or a hand condition, ask your hand therapist or clinician whether this movement is suitable and follow their individual instructions. This short demonstration is not a prescribed exercise dose.
