Make the next conversation a little easier

A few small changes to the setting can make speech easier to follow.

A CLEAR REASON TO BEGIN

Why try it?

Background noise and an unseen speaker can make listening harder. A quieter setting, a clear view and an unhurried conversation can reduce some of those barriers.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Let’s give it a try.

  1. 01
A television volume is turned down to make the setting quieter.

    Change the setting

Move away from background noise when you can. At home, turn down the television or music before starting a conversation.

  2. 02
Two adults face each other in good light.

    Make it face-to-face

Ask the other person to face you in good light. Tell them what helps—for example, speaking clearly without shouting.

  3. 03
A person asks for a sentence in a different way, with a written note as an additional option.

    Ask for a different phrase

If you miss a sentence, ask for it to be rephrased. Captions or a written note can help when a detail matters.

Keep it comfortable.

These communication habits do not restore hearing. If hearing is changing, arrange a hearing assessment. Sudden hearing loss needs urgent medical attention.
